Don’t really care much for this sport, but I guess yay? Still don’t care that much, but here’s 10 interesting facts for people like me who don’t know anything about baseball:
1. Started out in NY as the New York Gothams (1883-85), then became New York Giants (1885-1957), moved to CA in 1957 to become SF Giants.
2. The Giants have won the most games of any team in the history of American baseball, and any North American professional sports team with 21 National League pennants and appeared in 18 World Series championships; invited to the World Series an NL record 19 times, but boycotted the event in 1904.
3. Last won the World Series in 1954.
4. In 1992, the team was instead sold to an ownership group including managing general partner Peter Magowan, the former CEO of Safeway, Harmon Burns, and his wife, Sue, when following the 1989 World Series defeat to the Oakland A’s, a local ballot initiative to fund a new stadium in San Francisco failed.
5. After 40 years of playing at Candlestick park, the Giants moved to AT&T park.
6. In 2010, in a season described with the slogan “Giants’ Baseball: Torture” by broadcaster Duane Kuiper.
7. Giants also have been using the slogan “Fear The Beard” which replaced their previous slogan “Yes We Can”
8. The historic rivalry between the Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers is the longest-standing in baseball history.
9. As of 2009, the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame has inducted 66 representatives of the Giants (55 players and 11 managers) into the Hall of Fame, more than any other team in the history of baseball.
